We offer a series of school-wide foundational math workshops that are focused on the Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practice. These experiences are grounded in the belief that educators must experience high quality math instruction firsthand before beginning to embrace instructional shifts. In this workshop series, educators engage in rich math experiences, learning what it looks and feels like to problem solve, develop mathematical models, persevere, and construct viable arguments. Then they connect it to their own classroom practice.
Participants collaborate in grade level teams to plan an upcoming unit. During this time, teachers come to understand the math content they teach, leverage and enhance their curriculum materials, and develop a balanced unit that offers students a deep dive into important math content. Grade level unit planning workshops often serve as a springboard for classroom coaching.
We work side-by-side with teachers and their students to guide instructional shifts into classroom practice. We use a variety of structures to support teachers at the classroom level:
- Lesson Study
- Strength-based Data Analysis
- Observation and Reflective Conversations
- Video-Analysis
- Plan/Co-Teach/Co-Reflect Cycles
- Demonstration Lessons
Grounded in action research cycles, Lesson Study is the most impactful professional learning structure to improve instructional practice. We facilitate the entire process, from establishing overarching goals, to generating actionable questions about practice, to research and lesson design, to the collaborative teaching experience, to student work analysis and lesson revisions. We tailor Lesson Studies to your system and budget, designing cycles that work for you.
“I highly recommend Andrea and Math Transformation. The embedded support, guidance, and knowledge provided by Andrea and Math Transformation has systematically transformed how La Jolla Country Day School educators think about content, pedagogy, professional development, and the student’s learning experience. Andrea and team have provided support in high-quality math instruction; coherent flow of math content and experiences; in the design of how student’s experience mathematics; and in the deepening of collaboration amongst teachers, teaching teams, and grade-levels.”
